5 Simple Steps to Starting a Home Yoga Practice (That Actually Sticks)

We’ve all been there. You leave a yoga class in Haughley, Woolpit or Bury St Edmunds feeling floating and light, promising yourself you’ll roll out the mat at home before the next class. But then Monday happens. The washing pile grows, the phone pings, and suddenly, your mat stays tucked in the corner.
Starting a home practice doesn't have to be a "bit much." It’s not about having a perfect studio in your spare room; it’s about creating a small pocket of quiet in the middle of your life.
Here are five ways to finally make that home practice a reality:
1. Lower the Bar (The 10-Minute Rule)
Forget the 60-minute flow. If you wait for a full hour of "free time," you’ll never start. Instead, aim for just ten minutes. Ten minutes of mindful movement is always better than an hour of yoga you never did. Once you’re on the mat, you might find you want to stay longer - but the win happens the moment you sit down.
2. Create a "Sacred" (but Simple) Space
You don't need a dedicated room. You just need enough space to move your arms without hitting the sofa! Try to keep your mat, a couple of blocks (or thick books), and perhaps a favorite candle or an eye pillow / jumper in one place. When your "kit" is ready to go, the mental hurdle of starting disappears.
3. Focus on "Body and Mind"
Don't worry about complex transitions. Focus on what your body needs today. If your back feels tight from sitting at a desk, focus on gentle twists. If your mind is racing, focus on a long, slow Savasana. A home practice is your chance to be your own teacher and listen to what you need, not what the person on the next mat is doing.
4. Use Your Resources
You don’t have to "invent" a sequence. Whether it’s a favourite yoga book, a saved video, or a sequence from a workshop, having a guide removes the "what do I do now?" panic. (Hint: This is exactly why I provide a bespoke practice guide in my workshops!)
5. Be Kind to Yourself
Some days, your "yoga" might just be five minutes of deep breathing while the kettle boils. That counts. The goal isn't perfection; it’s connection.
If you’re looking for a bit more guidance, I’m hosting a 'Creating Your Home Practice' Workshop on Sunday 8th February in Woolpit.
We’ll spend the afternoon looking at simple sequences, how to use props, and most importantly, you’ll leave with your very own bespoke yoga practice to take home.

See you on your mat, Claudia x
